knitting: commentary31 october 2002: home again it was a lovely vacation, marred only by a 24 hour virus that first hit jim, then sophie, and finally me on the night before we flew home. mmmm, flying with a virus; can't say i recommend it. i did manage to do some knitting between visiting my old haunts and swimming in the pool or ocean. i finished two yellow and black striped hats for jim and me to wear on halloween, when sophie will be dressed as a bee. i started a pair of regia socks. and most importantly, i made major progress on sophie's christmas dress. the skirt is finished and i am now working on the front bodice. 11 october 2002: finished finished finished three down!
next up, sophie's sweater. i ripped out the arms today, because i think they were going to be too narrow. so i will instead pick up around the armholes and knit them in the round. less purling=happy knitter. we are leaving for guam on wednesday, for a two week vacation to see my old home one more time before my parents leave and move here to washington. i've not been back for ten years, so it will be as new for me as for jim and sophie in some ways. i am going to take sophie's christmas dress for an evening project. and i am still deciding if i am going to try and get either wooden double points or a bamboo circular onto the plane so i can knit during the 13 hours we'll be in the air. i have no idea how well sophie is going to do being cooped up for so long. the last time she flew she was only four months old, so it was easy. at 2 2/3 years, she is not so easily entertained or put to sleep, so whether or not i can get needles aboard may make no difference at all; i will most likely be busy entertaining the boo. in any event, any knitting i get done on the plane will have to be on a small project. i want to make sophie some bee socks to go with her halloween costume, but the yarn hasn't yet arrived. if it doesn't show, then i will probably take jim's alpaca scarf yarn, or maybe some stashed acrylic to make bee hats for jim and i. then the whole family will be a happy hive as we go trick-or-treating. 08 october 2002: pocket projects i've been trying to knit in tiny slices of time, so as not to get too far behind. that means almost all the work has been on tiny little portable projects. i expect i will finish sophie's slippers tonight, while watching television.
though i really don't need yet another work in progress, i couldn't help myself and started a little pumpkin hat for sophie. she has a halloween costume, but i thought it would be fun for her to have something to wear during the day, and for the few days before the holiday. and finally, the second sock is coming right along. the heel turned out much better on this one, i've improved on the whole picking up stitches thing since i did the first one. i even have the stripes matching up on both socks!. in non-knitting news, we now have a bird. sophie named her maisy and though i don't really like birds and know next to nothing about how to care for them, she is growing on me. i knit while sitting next to her, and it doesn't seem to freak her out, unlike just about everything else we do in her proximity. maybe the rhythmic clicking is as soothing to her as it is to me.
08 october 2002: and some more the sock yarn. i just bought one skein of each, to see if i liked them. it is enough to make socks for sophie, or maybe one of her friends. i definitely like the lorna's laces, i will be buying more for myself one day soon.
04 october 2002: a little more detail there are things i want to make in each and every one of these books. in the rowan children's book alone, there are about 20. i need to learn to knit faster, or to cut out all other extracurricular activity, so i can make all the sweaters before sophie is too big to wear them.
the vintage knits book is a little disappointing not just because all of the fair isle patterns are missing notation, but because there is nothing in xl. it will be my first challenge of this sort -- to adjust a written pattern up in size. 02 october 2002: another year older we've been having a lovely visit with jim's mother. there's not been too much progress on the knitting front, though, as we are on the go most afternoons and evenings and we've been watching movies at night. she prefers watching with the lights out and i have yet to master the art of knitting without looking at my fingers. i can't touch type either.
i did start a pair of very bright slippers for sophie. she keeps stealing her nanny's so i promised her a pair of her own. i can't decide if i am enchanted by the color, or repulsed. my birthday was on saturday and i scored on the knitting front: four books, and the promise of something knitting related from my sister. i also bought myself a present, some lorna's laces and regia stretch to fuel my burgeoning sock obsession. one's fortieth deserves some new yarn, at the very least. back to: a.green.girl :: hands |
