knitting: commentary

24 december 2002: 'twas the night before christmas

and unlike the mouse, i am a'stirring.

fabulous christmas present: we have reviewed your recent follow-up Breast Imaging Evaluation and it show a finding we believe is almost certainly benign [not cancer]. i have to go back in six months to make sure nothing has changed, but the lump looks to be just a lump.

i've been holly jollying about the past two weeks and look! i have pictures! first, the cookies. though in years past [mostly pre-sophie] i was insistent upon baking at least ten kinds of cookies, this year i settled for four. for my friends, i put them on vintage harker platters along with little gifts and a few chocolate ornaments.

i made several sets of marble magnets and pushpins for friends and family. i've been cutting out circles for the better part of six months, so it was just a matter of sitting down with nine million little bits of paper, trying to make good sets. i think i had a total of 14 sets, but didn't bother photographing all of them [lucky you!].

then there were the simple wine charm sets. i need to make a few more sets of these for someone whose birthday is later this week. i think i'll bead some stars and attach them in place of the larger beads.

and, yes, there was knitting. i decided against embroidering the plain green hat so i instead made another one with the heart motif for the eldest niece. a striped hat for the last niece and a purple mohair one for a family friend and you have the end of the hat run. almost. still need to make my sister's but it looks as though she accidentally threw out the swatch i sent her so i don't know if the yarn is a go or not. i also seem to have lost the first heart hat somewhere in the depths of my world. i really need to find that and soon, but i am running out of places to look.

sophie's christmas dress? finished! though i cannot seem to get a decent picture of her in it. she is in constant motion and the dress is a little dark so mostly i get pictures of a blonde-haired, black blur flying by the camera.

and just becaue i think she is cute as all get out, another picture of sophie, modelling desiree's hat.

now i need to wrap a few more presents, drink a nice warm cup of cocoa, then trundle myself off to bed to wait for santa's visit and the chaos in the morning.

merry christmas to all! and to all, a good night.

11 december 2002: queen of hats

i am the mad hatter.

four hats have been finished, except for the weaving of ends, and one hat has been co-opted for my gift purposes [i'll be embroidering flowers on a plain green hat i made over the summer]. that would have made the five i need, except one hat turned out rather too small for one of the nieces so i will give it to a friend's daughter, and then knit one more. and one more still, as my sister asked very nicely if i could knit one for her "big ol' melonhead."

i've knit an amazing number of stitches while sitting in boring meetings. i should be grateful for the otherwise wasted time; i don't think i'd have finished all the hats so quickly without them.

i have new glasses.

08 december 2002: awake

my daughter, though incredibly beautiful and the light of my life, drives me absolutely crazy at bedtime. she prefers not to sleep. i prefer to sleep. we have yet to resolve this difference.

i've already walked her back to her bed twelve times tonight. i'm not getting any knitting done so i thought i'd post a quick update. pictures may follow eventually.

dad's cashmere scarf: done, and in time for his birthday. lucky for me, he likes it. he's rather difficult to please but he does like his little luxuries and i rightly guessed cashmere might rope him in.

christmas gift hats for the nieces and nephews: three done, one knit but awaiting embroidery, one in progress. jim doesn't think the hats will be received with a great deal of enthusiasm, but at this point i don't really care. they are cute and functional and even a bit fashionable. and i had a great time knitting them.

sophie's christmas dress: done, except for all the sewing. i need to tack down the pleats, the cuffs, and sew on some buttons.
