knitting: commentary

23 january 20023 the hood that ate the western world

so, during the two days of interminable meetings last week, i worked on the sweater that would not be a scarf. i'm making it up as i go along, which has been interesting. things were going fairly well until the hood. i swear, it just wanted to be bigger and bigger and oddly shaped and it ate up entirely too much yarn. while it's rather cute, and definitely different, i am not altogether convinced it is going to stay on sophie's head. as much as it would pain me, i may have to rip the bloody thing out.

the sweater the hood

i started on a tiny sweater for tom and stacey's baby as well. he's due sometime in february, so i'd best get a move on.

tiny sweater

on the acquisition front, no new yarn. i've been a very good girl.

12 january 20023 stalled

there has been very little knitting in my world this past week. too much work, too much play and now too much pain. i coughed while sitting and have done something terrible to my back. i feel like gumby gone awry--all bent in strange places. hopefully, it will get better soon.

i did, however, make some time to finally dye some yarn. i used a bunch of my stash koolaid, and now i need to hope some of the flavours are still made. like the pineapple one that made the bright bright yellow. and mandarina tangerina makes a screaming good orange. i have an equal amount i haven't dyed so i'm thinking of something in stripes, so it's not too hippy crazy, just hippy crazy enough.

white wool not white wool

and speaking of hippy, this is the beginning of sophie's poncho. we always had ponchos as kids growing up in the 60's and 70's, so i figured sophie needs one as well. i think the other panel will be gray, as i am all out of the oimochan. i do so love the way the colour moves through this yarn. i actually toyed with the idea of keeping it for me, as some sort of little mat, just to look at when i needed a boost.

i have two days of meetings and lectures ahead, and i left my bag with all my works in progress at my parents'. i can't imagine sitting there with nothing in my hands, so i guess i have no choice but to cast-on something new. it needs to be somewhat mindless, and small, so maybe i'll start another pair of socks.

06 january 20023 epiphany

on the 12th day of christmas, my true love gave to me...

well, nothing, really, but he did right by me for christmas day so all is good in the world. new needles and a new knitting book [the ultimate knitter's guide] and a new paper cutter make k a very happy girl.

i did manage to finish my sister's hat in time for her birthday but i haven't finished the scarf yet. the pattern is beginning to annoy me but i have to just slog through it and get the bloody thing over and done with.

then finish jim's scarf, sophie's sweater and vicki's socks before i am allowed to start something new.
