knitting: commentary31 may 2003 seamingly twice a month updates, it's working for me. i've been knitting, knitting, knitting, and completely avoiding the whole blocking, seaming, finishing thing. that's going to have to stop pretty soon. i have all the pieces of the romper and matching sweater knit up. so all that's left is what? seaming and finishing. using the cotton ease, which is a little thicker than the yarn called for, has made me decide to change the button bands and neck edgings. the pattern calls for a folded over picot edge thing, but it is going to be too bulky what with all of that going on around the hem. so something more simple -- maybe attached i-cord, maybe just crab stitching. then of course a matching hat and pair of booties. and little crocheted flowers as decoration. next up is the sugar sweet, pink and purple garter stitch jacket. i am praying i have enough yarn. i was so good, using stash rather than buying anything but the downside is there is no chance of me matching the yarn if i need a little more. i'm thinking of adding a gray border on the front edges, and then i can use some gray in the sleeves [maybe the cuffs?] and can make the requisite hat and booties mainly gray, with pink and purple accents. we'll see how it all works out. the biggest knitting accomplishment involved no knitting at all. i took two childfree days -- the wildebeest was spending the night at grandma and granddaddy's -- to sort and list and photograph my entire stash. i know exactly how much i have, what color, and where it is. scary. i even have a large bin of acrylic that i will either give away, use for quickie hats and scarves, or use with the barbie knitting machine to make tubes that i can sew together into funky afghans. the upshot is i have entirely too much yarn for which i have no intended purpose. i must develop some purpose. 13 may 2003 no night knitting sophie is going through another phase during which she sleeps at times incredibly inconvenient for her mother. naps mid-afternoon, just as i arrive home; bed at 1030 or 11. i'm getting little to no knitting done in the evenings and it is making me crazy. i have so many things in my head waiting to get out, and i'm still trapped in layette land. i did get the back done for the romper, and am steadily working up the front. it knits very quickly, so that's a plus. even with all the evening distractions, i think the set will be done by month's end. i also found the pattern and needles and have finished knitting the baby cardigan. i used up every little bit of yarn, and while i think i have enough to seam, the more i think about it, the more i want a little hat and booties to go with the sweater. so i've tracked down some of the yarn -- same color, different dyelot -- in the yukon of all places, and i think i'll send for it. the dyelot difference shouldn't be too pronounced if the accessories are entirely of the new dyelot and the sweater of the old. at least i hope so. here is a close-up of the two little button fasteners i'll sew onto the right front. now i just need to find some great buttons to finish it off. every year we drive up to the skagit valley for the tulip festival. our favorite thing other than the flowers has always been llamas and ttulips. sadly, this was the last year. to commemorate the joy we've had there year after year, i bought a skein of the softest llama wool, to make jim a watchman's hat. i love fondling this wool; it's taking quite a bit of effort to not cast on with it right now. back to: a.green.girl :: hands |
