knitting: commentary

31 oct 2003 boo-tiful dreamer

dreaming about knitting. these days, i've been thinking and dreaming more than doing. which isn't so bad, until i start to think of all the christmas presents yet to be finished and the two layettes that need to be completed and then i think there should definitely be more doing.

so, of course, instead of finishing what i've started, i started and finished something new: another felted bag. i am making little refinements with each pass at this pattern, and pretty soon i shall have the ultimate bag. this one still needs to be felted, but in the mean time, sophie likes to wear it on her head.

and my wonderful prize from the mouse-a-thon arrived! this wool is so gorgeous and soft. i absolutely love it. i love enough that i am tempted to make something out of it that i would wear more often than the swing coat for which it is intended. i'll have to dwell on that. i like the coat's pattern, but intarsia gives me fits, and i prefer my coats, jackets, overthings to be single-coloured, and darkish. maybe i'll get some forest green wool and make the coat and then use the blues for a sweater. or maybe not.

happy halloween!

22 oct 2003 useless depictions

knitting? i remember knitting. it was that thing i did in the evenings when my child went to bed. she's given up on the whole bed thing again, i think mostly as a reaction to once again being trapped at home with only mummy and daddy, her nanny and great aunt having abandoned her and returned to florida. actually, last year she was much worse, this year it is only the bedtime thing that has fallen to pieces, so i should be grateful. and i know things will settle down again and i will return to regular needle clicking and clacking, but for now? not so much.

there has been some small progress on some of the projects, but the yarn colour and stitch definition is such that the pictures i take are fairly useless. for instance, this is the second colour of jim's alpaca scarf:

it's a lovely 3X3 ribbing, but it mostly looks like some sort of furry snake in the picture. and this is the front of the latest layette:

you can tell its red, but not that there is garter stitch at the bottom, a moss stitch heart in the middle and moss stitch on the yoke. don't believe me? here's a closeup of the heart:

good thing i don't need to really make anyone believe me. and finally, a picture that really does do the project justice:

i was stuck in a series of demos today, so i turned the heel and started up the ankle. socks make good airplane knitting so if i don't finish this one and its mate before nov 4, i'll take them along for my latest jaunt; it's cross-country so i expect there will be plenty of time to go round and round and round on the socks.

oooh! and i almost forgot! i won one of wendy's great mouse-a-thon prizes! i never win anything so this is very exciting. i can't wait until it gets here.

02 oct 2003 because i am a dolt, on occasion

in the very recent past, thgere was an entry for today. but i killed it. it was mostly a sigh of relief at having the house back to ourselves, and a pictorial of the state of the wip.

at least i can recreate the pretty pictures:

02 oct 2003 a small hello

as predicted, knitting productivity is down what with the annual visit of my mother-in-law. and this year, jim's aunt is here as well. we're having a great time, driving lots of places and shopping and siteseeing and all that sort of stuff, but it does mean i have about two minutes to myself every day. it's starting to make me a little itchy; i need to steal away and get my fix pretty soon.

i did finish the mice in time:

these are my three favourites. i became strangely attached to the little guys, as did sophie. she is in that phase of toddlerhood wherein she thinks she is a dog or a cat on a daily basis. the cat persona was loathe to let the mice go.

in other news, the cardigan i was making for jim's mom just about fits! i am still putting in the sidebands because she wants it roomier. and if i have yarn left, she'd like it longer as well. the chickami was another story -- it is too big for me and it turns out for her as well, so RIP! and suddenly, i have nine skeins of yarn with which to try again one day soon.

a little knitting on jim's scarf, a small start on the next layette and that's that. hopefully i will be back soon with more to report.
