knitting: commentary

24 may 2004 break

it was a very bad week for knitting. but an extremely productive week at the office. i am heading into an incredibly crazy schedule of projects due, so i expect i will have less time in general for knitting from now through june. of course, there are always meetings, so i really need to find some new small portable projects.

i did squeak in a visit to the fabric store where i purchased the sage green polar fleece to use as backing for g's blanket. i need to get the whole thing pinned together so i can sew it up and finally get it in the mail.

i also did all the sewing on sophie's orange so it is a done deal! the picot edge came out very nicely, and i love the sunflower buttons. i do want to do one more fitting so i can see if i need to shorten the straps a little for this year, but that is easily done if required.

the reluctant model. i think all the pictures we have taken of her over the years have finally gotten to her; lately, she refuses to smile.

16 may 2004 blanket

the knitting part of the blanket is complete! still no good pictures as it has been gray and rainy here this weekend.

now, onto the back. i calculated i have 14x2x7 ends to weave in. that's 196, baby. so, i am all about finding a way to avoid that. i'm dwelling on a polar fleece backing and using the ends to tie it securely to the blanket, sort of like quilting. i might even use some of the ends to embroider on the fleece. of course, this is all hypothetical; i need to hit the fabric store to see what is available.

and rather than weave ends on sophie's orange, or finally putting the extra length on j's mom's cardigan, i started a tank top. for me.

10 may 2004 wasabi

to stick with a theme, i watched the movie "wasabi" this weekend, while finishing the knitting on my wasabi coloured lacy hat. sophie is a total goofball these days, so here she is, modeling.

yet another picture opf the never-ending blanket. actually, the end is in sight; if i am lucky, this will be done this weekend. maybe we'll have a sunny day, and i can take a picture outside to capture the real colours. i've also had a brainstorm involving backing and the non-weaving of ends -- i just need to think it through a little more.

06 may 2004 tasty

a small diversion from knitting: tim's cascade potato chips are wonderful. and the limited edition wasabi version is beyond wonderful. it's amazing that there are any left at all when they've been in the house for over an hour.

in knitting news, the blanket is still the primary home-based project, but i need something small for the office. so i picked up the previously frogged lacy hat and re-started it. hopefully it will get me through all the meetings i have tomorrow. i might need to throw a skein of sock yarn into my bag, just in case.

04 may 2004 musing

i'm hard at work on the blanket, hoping to have it done by the middle of the month. but i can't stop the brain from thinking about something new. i've swatched some silk i have and think it may well be a summer tank...

02 may 2004 2200 close enough for government work

i have no needles with eyes small enough to sew on the buttons. i took my sewing notions over to my mom's when she borrowed my sewing machine, and neglected to keep anything at home. so, i'll head over there early, and before i drive them to the airport, i'll do the last bit of stitching.

and now? now it's time to rethread the made-by/care-by tags with yarns form the projects, and then to bed.

02 may 2004 2030 roadblock

okay, all ends are woven in. so, all that is left is buttons and elastic. and that's the problem. the pattern says:

Fold casing to WS and sew in place, leaving an opening at each end for elastic.

so far so good.

Thread elastic through casing and adjust to fit. Secure elastic and sew openings closed.

am i supposed to cut tiny little pieces of elastic to fit totally inside the casing? that's what makes the most sense to me, but the securing and sewing closed just refuses to look proper. i thought, for one brief moment, the elastic should go through one casing, across the butt, through the other casing and back to the first, but that was completely ugly. not to mention nigh-on unwearable. i'm going to have to try again.

02 may 2004 1530 closer

purchases in hand, it's time to start with the weaving, the sewing, the labelling. i think i'm going to make it!

02 may 2004 1030 the finish line

as of sunday morning, i am one bucket hat top away from completing all the knitting. the pinafore is done, the diaper cover is done. once the hat is finished, it will be a quick jaunt to the store for buttons and some elastic, maybe some grey thread, and then it's time to dig out the needles and weave, weave weave the ends...
