31 august 2004 one step backward
i had my camera at the office today so it's time for a mini show and tell:
1] i promised a coworker a pair of socks over two months ago; this is the yarn he chose. however, he has yet to give me the measurements of his feet so i don't even feel guilty looking at it everyday.
2] this is a ball of rather ugly navy blue acrylic and the two mismatched size 4 needles i keep on hand just in case i am caught without real knitting at a meeting. it will eventually be the densest, skinniest multi-directional scarf ever.
and this? why, yes, this is the sweater for j's mom. somehow progress has lessened from the last picture. the part you missed is where it was much longer and i looked at it and thought to myself, self? i know you vowed to knit more loosely and therefore you were assured of getting gauge, but self? that just looks a little too narrow. and so it was. and so it was ripped and then restarted on bigger needles. such is.
more on my seeming inability to knit loosely: my meathead hat. i think i have just a little too much yarn left over. i've emailed larissa asking for a target circumference; i can reknit, if needed, as it was an astoundingly quick project to complete.
23 august 2004 the annual attempt
j's mom will most likely be here for her annual visit next month, so it is time for me to start the annual sweater; maybe this one will do the trick. it is a cardigan from the green mountain spinnery book -- i can make it as long as she likes so i think this one will be a winner. it's hard to see in this picture, but it's a 4x1 rib stitch where the 1 is seed stitch, not purl. simple, but decorative.
22 august 2004 gearing up
j is back from his two weeks in florida, so my semi-vacation is over. i didn't get as much done around the house as i had hoped to, but i did have a great time just spending a lot of one on one time with sophie. there was much swimming and general merry-making and not so much cleaning. and not so much organizing, not even in the knitting department, though i did finally get all the yarn in one place. the conclusion? i have a lot of yarn.
i put all the unfinished projects into their own little canvas bags, making it easy to grab them and go whenever i have some spare time. first up? reknitting the noro silk garden beanie. it had inadvertantly made its way into the wash and it didn't felt; it grew. so i ripped it out and reknit and it is just about done. actually, the hat is done, but i have a little yarn left over so i am thinking of maybe some earflaps and ties.
and here is g, with her blanket. she loved it, so all the pain of stitching it has faded away.
14 august 2004 at last
so, at long last, the blanket is completely finished. i chose to hand stitch the polar fleece backing to the blanket, and while it looks most excellent and neat, it took much longer than i thought it would. and it was much harder on my hands than i had anticipated.
but it is done! and on its way to g. and now sophie is clamouring for her own blanket, something i promised her about a year ago. guess i better get knitting...
04 august 2004 vacation
i finished anouk! it is so very cute, i hope i get a picture with it on emily, so i can see if it is cute in action.
i have two weeks of semi-vacation so i am going to spend some quality time organizing and straightening out the knitting world, rather than actually knitting. i ordered some red heart with wool to make j's mother yet another sweater; one of these years i will make something that actually fits and is suited to her. i also found more of the yarn from which i was making sophie's halter, so i think i am going to change it into a pinafore; i really love the way it knits up and it seems it would be warm enough for her to wear in the autumn and winter. then once i get all the other yarns and planned projects in some sort of orderly fashion, i will attempt to finish some of the poor neglected works in progress.
