green.girl knitting: commentary

30 april 2005 two down

i took the opportunity while watching dvds to finally finish sewing in all the ends of the colourful prayer shawl. all done! and just in time to go to g for her birthday. it is just the right length and used up all the leftovers from her patchwork blanket. stash effectively busted!

i also found the time, during three very long meetings at the office, to knit the new zealand gift wool into this lovely scarf. it is a twisted stitch pattern that ends up looking as though the yarn is woven rather than knit. i love it especially as it reminds me of the blackberry brambles found all over my neighbourhood. the dark greens and rich purples make me want to go berry picking right this minute.

and i have picked up the chainmail cami to try and finish it off. have you ever kept knitting something even though you were fairly sure you were going to hate the end result? i just can't see me wearing this very heavy, very dense, very shiny top, with the rolling bottom that refuses to not roll no matter what. but i can't stop myself from knitting it either. strange...

25 april 2005 ready

the kaleidoscope layette is done! i am in love with cherry tree north country cotton -- it is so soft and knits up so perfectly. and i am also in love with the little sock pattern from kirstin spunkland's knits from the heart.

24 april 2005 gifted

i need to decide about tassels for the points of the little hat. i am completely enamoured with it, and almost wish sophie were small enough for me to stuff her noggin into it. and i still have some yarn left so i am making a pair of tiny socks.

isn't this a gorgeous yarn? it is a chunky wool boucle and i've been experimenting with various stitches to decide which would work best in a scarf, as it is just the one skein of 100 yards. my very lovely coworker brought it for me from new zealand. it smells great, too!

20 april 2005 better

having met with both my gall bladder surgeon and my urologist, i can say with much relief that my innards are in fine shape. the gall bladder is gone with no side effects, and the kidney has shrunk to 1/4 of the grapefruit size it was, and is functioning very well. yay for happy innards!

all the knitting is done for julia's sweater so now it is weaving in of the ends, and sewing in of the sleeves. and i've already found buttons so it is all downhill from here. i really like the way this is turning out; i think i will make a larger one for sophie.

and i've finally found buttons i like for the kaleidoscope. and i found a gigantic snag. i blame the cat, although it is a miracle she only grabbed the one stitch. hopefully i can work it back out so it isn't flying around like a loopy flag.

since the new mother has waited so patiently for me to deal with button button who's got the button, i am making a little hat. the band knit as a long strip and then i'll use some other leftover cottons to pick up along a long edge and knit to the crown. should be a quick little project!

13 april 2005 sharks

proof positive that knitting and sharks do not a happy couple make. i was knitting while watching 'open water' and look at those loose rows! i can't decide if i will rip back for consistencies sake, or just deal with it and hope it is less noticable after blocking.

10 april 2005 sleeveless

the fronts and back are done and living happily together. when i finished the back, a year ago, i had bound off all the stitches. however, i unpicked the edges on each shoulder friday night, and used a three-needle bind-off to attach fronts and backs. yay for no seaming with a needle!

i'm working the sleeves at the same time, as i might be squeaking by with just enough yarn; it's hard to tell with unlabelled skeins -- maybe they're full, maybe someone used a few yards. i'm pretty sure i'll be okay, but no point in taking any chances. and see the pretty stitch marker? that's one of two from laura -- they match the knit quite nicely.

04 april 2005 revived

after powering through clapotis, i was ready to go back and pick up something that has been languishing -- the lacy sweater for my god-daughter julia. her birthday is in july, so it will be done in plenty of time to send it to her in germany. i am really loving the pattern this time around -- it is easily memorized and i rarely need to look to the pattern for guidance.

it's a little hard to photograph, but the difference in my knitting quality is really easy to see. i knit the back a year ago, and the stitches are much more uneven and the lace bits much less defined than in the piece of the front i knit tonight. i guess i am making progress after all!

02 april 2005 success

et, voila! we have achieved clapotis! i used knitpicks merino in pine and made it slightly longer than called for so it is a substantial scarf/shawl/throw thingie. i love it and have decided i will actually keep it for myself. will wonders never cease.

the picture of innocence. me? i'm just licking this leg here, never mind that yarn, must have sat down on it without noticing. nothing to see here, move along. wicked cat! at least she was smart enough to wait six weeks, to make sure she was firmly cemented in our family, before attacking the yarn stash.
