30 may 2005 memorial
i've had a lovely long weekend so far. my sister is visiting from texas and we spent the entire afternoon sitting around my mother's kitchen table, knitting. she is just re-learning how so i brought her a variety of nice yarns; no use in her practicing on something she won't want to wear later, as she says. i think she's going to start off with a scarf made of himalayan sari/wool in a lovely forest green. it's been in my stash forever, so i am glad to see it go to a good home. some other yarn jumped into her bag as well, so i am a little lighter and she is hopefully on her way to a lovely fiber addiction.
in continuing project news, i've started strip three of the maisy blanket. i assembled a new set of bunk-beds for sophie this weekend, so she will be needing a blanket for one mattress or the other. i'd best get cracking.
and showing a complete lack of patience, i unzipped the waste yarn and knit the afterthought heel on the sock. i used the six-point decrease, and except for not being completely happy with the stitches i picked up in the corner, i am pleased with the result. i'm just about to the point where i'll begin decreasing for the toe, and then must immediately cast-on for number 2! no second sock syndrome for me. this time.
20 may 2005 duty
various and sundry duties have been keeping me away from the needles. i've been buying and building beds and bookshelves, trying to catch up at work, and washing washing washing seemingly endless loads of clothes. i don't know why all of a sudden laundry is the bane of my existance, but the bane it is. despite all that, here is the second strip of the maisy blanket. onto strip 3!
it is thundering at the moment. i do so love thunder and it doesn't seem to happen here as often as other places i have lived.
back to duty, this is how much sock i can knit while doing time in the king county superior court jury waiting room. i didn't get picked for a trial but had to sit through jury selection for one trial and fill out questionnaires for another, so i didn't do as much as i thought i might. i did finish my book, though. kazuo ishiguro's 'never let me go' was interesting and well-written, but ultimately unsatisfying.
08 may 2005 mothers
as a mother, i really have to make sure i don't make empty promises to my child. over a year ago, i told sophie i would make her a maisy blanket, so i figured i'd better get started before she is too old to be seen with a maisy blanket. the first of six stripes is done and i'm cruising through the second.
happy mother's day!
