green.girl knitting: commentary

31 december 2005 auld lang syne

i thought i'd better get a quick end of year entry up, just to end on a knitting note. i really do hope to be more productive next year -- i'm not big on resolutions, but i'd like to knit at least two sweaters for me and one for jim, perhaps a cardigan for sophie, and a lacy shrug for a good friend. other than that, all bets are off.

i did finsh the fingerless mittens. amd even though io measured obsessively, i did not measure accurately as one is most definitely larger than the other. not particularly noticable when i wear them, though, so i decided to live with it. they are plenty warm, and that was the objective.

i had an entire ball, plus yardage left from the other two balls, so i made my mama a hat! she has short hair, and her ears get bitterly cold in the winter. she'd mused about a hat with earflaps so i made her one. no real pattern, just started with a small i-cord at the top, increased until i reached a reasonable circumference, did a purl round for definition, a few inches of linen stitch, another purl round then stockinette until i reached the end. i-cord bind-off then picked up for the knit stich earflaps, with i-cord ties. it is terribly cute, on both her and sophie, who kindly modelled for me.

this? this is the only knitting related gift i received this holiday [from a coworker], but that doesn't mean i wasn't spoiled rotten. j, who has apparently been saving all his pennies for a year, went hog wild; he really is the most wonderful man in the world: a new television, dvd recorder, video camera, unbelievable slippers, a dremel, a fantastic book, a kitchen-aid slicing attachment, moose munch, starbucks card, and the list goes on.... truly blessed.

last, but not least, i finally started my klee scarf, from the kit i bought for my birthday. i am as much in love with it today as the first day i saw it and hope to finish it very soon so i can snuggle it round my neck. it will make me very, very happy.

happy 2006!

this represents the sum of all the december knitting to date: a single fingerless mitten. life this year has been busier than usual in general and of course now there is all the requisite christmas fa-la-la-ing, which takes time what with all the christmas shopping and the gift wrapping and the post office going and the tree procurring and subsequent decorating and the holiday partying. to top it all off, end of year is always crazy at work, with everyone scrambling to recognize every little penny of revenue. so i am putting in quite a few extra hours both in the office and at home.

at least i now have evidence that all the hard work is paying off.
