green.girl knitting: commentary

24 december 2006 snowflakes

my unconventional office advent calendar: a snowflake for each day.

may your days be merry and bright.

20 december 2006 sad

i am so far behind schedule with end of year commitments at work that all thoughts of knitting have gone by the wayside. this is sophie's maisy scarf, started during a meeting and now sitting lonely and unfinished on the end of my desk. good thing i wasn't counting on it being one of her christmas presents.

17 december 2006 done

another day, still no power. i did manage to finish the blue lagoon soap bag, so that's another set in the gift pile. i can see my breath here in the house, so it's not all that comfortable to be knitting, especially since the curtains must be open if there is to be enough light. any sense of adventure is long gone and it is swiftly moving toward tedium. we've read just about every book sophia owns, christmas crafted until our fingers are glued together and sang more verses of white christmas than i care to recall and now her 6 year old self has had enough. there is a rumour that my parents' area is powered up so i think we'll venture out.

16 december 2006 dim

good thing i still keep a lot of candles around -- old habits die hard -- because the power is long gone. and there is not much to do other than huddle and try to keep warm as the temperatures are plummeting. brrrrrr. there is just enough light to knit by, so i'm finishing up the shawl, even though i have strong suspicions that there will be no christmas party tonight; kirkland has no power either.

the pattern calls for picking up stitches and then making an i-cord edging, but i couldn't see how it would work the way i did it. so, rather than knit the i-cord, i purled it. worked quite nicely, it did.

and here is the edge. it is quite lovely and it's a shame i won't have an occasion to wear it any time soon. mayhaps it shall be gifted...

15 december 2006 close

a tree to the right...

a tree to the left...

and amazingly, no damage to anything other than my nerves. it was not unlike being in guam, in the middle of a typhoon.

09 december 2006 short

another day. another four rows. time is running short so i think the shawl also shall be short.

08 december 2006 little

now that the rows are 257 stitches long, things are moving along at a much slower pace. and i am finding it harder to steal the minutes required to do more than a row or two at a time. tick tock, tick tock, december 16 fast approacheth...

while frantically reboxing and rebagging and organizing and hiding in anticipation of jim's mother coming to town [much like santa], i rediscovered the blue lagoon warshcloth set. it lacked the soap bag and the ends being dealt with, so i naturally stopped all cleaning activities, and started the bag. the ends can wait a little longer.

and finally, while in the self-same cleaning fenzy, i also unearthed the leftovers from the sweater i made jim's mom a few years ago. it is a wool/acrylic blend, washable, and in the perfect colour to go with my ubiquitous overalls. how have i gone this long without a blue scarf? everyone needs a blue scarf, right?

02 december 2006 santa [more]

he is my mostest favourite santa ever. bar none.
