green.girl knitting: commentary

28 march 2007 progress

or lack thereof. i did finish the short red scarf, but i don't know where it is at the moment, so no photo. and the blanket is still unlined, though it now has all the ties tied properly and safety pins around the perimeter to prepare it for the hand-sewing.

another two stripes on mrs. s's shawl. i do so love this yarn knit at this gauge. so soft, so very fluid. so hard to give up [i just know i am going to fight with myself right up until the time i hand the thing over].

and for no other reason than it was close at hand, i started the second sock. i want to get them both to the ankle section, the first is already there, and then i will move them to two circs to finish them off at the same time. i'll make sure to use all the yarn that way too. having big feet makes one careful with the yardage -- i fear running out when the socks are different lengths.

i'm starting sophie early in the fiber arts world. for her science fair, we dyed both fabric and wool with vegetables. it was a lot of fun, even if the colors were somewhat muted. i'm going to make a little wall quilt out of the samples.

and here is the little scientist, dressed in a handknit sweater from her grandmother. the grandmother is much more forthcoming, not to mention quicker, in the knitting department than i.

sometimes, it's easiest to just have a list. in this case, the list of things i've been working on in the few moments when i've been knitting. also? the digi-camera lens has been scratched something fierce. no one has owned up to it, but all the photos now have a big blurred spot on them. i hate shopping for new electronics, but i expect i shall as it is not making me nor the rest of the family happy to have one third of our memories blurry.

anyhow, on to the knitting progress. here is a shot of the edging on the log cabin baby blanket. two rows of single crochet is probably my favorite edging for blankets. it is stiff enough to give some definition, but not so stiff as to make it less flexible than the rest of the blanket.

and here is the back. i've got all the ends tied through the backing. i just need to add some more ties for further stability, then i'll begin the montonous task of sewing the backing to the blanket with tiny little stitches.

this is the beginning of the end of year present for sophie's first grade teacher. i am so loving these colors, and the softness of the yarn. it is an apple laine kit and i am so sorely tempted to keep the yarn for myself. good thing mrs. s has been an outstanding teacher; i think that will overcome my fiber lust. i am one color away from having used each once. just need to repeat that seven times and it will be done.

this started as an emergency office knitting project. an unexpected meeting + one skein of a tweedy yarn + a pair of chopsticks + *k2 k1tbl p1* k2 = a scarf that might just be long enough to knot around my neck. or maybe i gift it to a wee child so it can actually look more scarf like.

and look! another finished item! this one had been my previous office knitting. a maisy mouse inspired scarf for sophie. she's pretty much outgrown maisy but the entire family still has a fondness for the creature, so maisy themed items are still in play. just plain garter stitch, ten blocks of red, blue, yellow, white and black.

and i had yarn leftover to make a hat! all this yarn is in fact leftover from the maisy blanket that is still waiting for me to back it. and there is still enough, i think, to make a pair of mittens. and that, my friends, will be the end of the maisy set. i think.
