green.girl knitting: commentary

21 july 2007 hot

actually, it has been much cooler this week -- rainy even for a few days -- but i have heat-hangover, as does the house. no matter how many windows we have open, and doors, and how many fans we have going every which direction, we can't seem to get the feeling of heat out of the place. also? we're trying to purge the household of some of the stuff that continually threatens to overcome us. so, with those excuses, i now move to show you the small amount of knitting that has occurred of late.

second time proved perfect. while she could have done with another inch or two in length, she was content with it as is since we'd have had to order more yarn to make it any longer. i ended with about two feet of yarn left over! i just need to weave and block and hand it over.

i've just about finished the second handwarmer. i knit a little swatch of the yarn and over-dyed it with several different colors and not a one of them made me happy so i think they shall remain their bright obnoxious selves. they are for a 12 year old, so i expect bright and obnoxious will work for her better than for me.

and here is the progress on the shrug. it is just straight stockinette for several inches now, nice and mindless, so i can pick it up and put it down at will whenever i have a few moments. i love when there is some mindless knitting to do -- no measuring or counting for rows and rows; five minutes here and there can easily be filled with stitches without worry about maintaining a pattern or anything.

in the fortuitous damage category i give you this: my new ball winding setup. the lid to one of our wooden chests cracked into pieces and i salvaged one of them. swift on one end, ball-winder on the other and voila! portable yet permament setup. now i don't need to clear off anything to find a place to clamp them; i can even balance the board on my knees if need be. very handy.

06 july 2007 back to where we started from

being the smallest size and having no sleeves, this cami just zips right along. a few days off meant more knitting time and i am already just about through the lace section. i expect it may well be finished by the weekend. i've got my fingers crossed that it will now be the right size -- it looks good to me -- because i don't know if frogging twice will make me very happy. on the other hand, it might not bother me at all.

in anticipation, i did dig out the yarn for the shrug, and cast on the first row of stitches. it is a lovely brown alpaca blend and will probably not be as comfortable to work with in the heat as the cotton/modal of the camisole.

finally, part of the great sock yarn binge of june 2007. i love how it balled up to look like a 70's plaid. sKNITches in woodland.

02 july 2007 start over

so, i had a little frogging party. the person for whom the camisole is intended had a rather inflated sense of her size. i took it to work and she held it up and it was immediately apparent that even though she had said she needed 32", she really needed quite a bit less. so i am going to knit the smallest size on smaller needles and we'll see where that gets us. strangely, this discouraged me not at all.

i did finish the ties for the little hat. i made them rather long so the mother can decide how long she actually would like them to be; easy enough for her to cut to length and then reknot the ends.

and i also wove in all the ends of the peter rabbit scarf. it is so soft and lovely and even though it is beastly hot, i still wrap it around my neck periodically just to luxuriate. then i rip if off in a fit of sweatiness. ah well, autumn will be here soon enough...
