15 september 2007 bind off
as i've not knit that many pairs of socks, i've not yet found a favourite bind-off. as a tight knitter, binding off the cuff is a challenge. i've done the sewing kitchneresque bindoff and it was great though it looked a bit fluttery. i did a picot edge and it is not as stretchy as i would have liked. so i decided to try two new ones.
the first involved a m1 after each pair of k2, and each pair of p2 on the last row before bindoff. the made stitches are not knit on the bindoff round, just slipped and used to bindoff the next stitch. it wasn't bad as far as stretchiness went, but with this colorway, it made for a jarring contrast when the working yarn was brown and the slipped stitch was green. i hated that.
so i tried the russion bindoff, with the k2, slip back and k2t, k1, slip the two right hand stitches to the left needle and k2t and so on. though it too was a bit fluttery, the stretchiness was fab. so i'll be ripping out the first one and shall rebind off in the russian manner.
13 september 2007 for my pleasure
after trying them on, i think the socks are long enough. i have more yarn left but i think any additional length would look silly -- too long for regular socks, not long enough for knee socks. i hate that awkward middle ground. therefore, the ribbing has begun...
12 september 2007 blobs
something else about this yarn that i dislike: there are blobs of bright bright apple kelly green every so often. as if something had been spilled on the other wise muted colors. every time i see one, i grind my teeth.
no such problems i hope in this new skein. it was destined to be socks for jim, but he informed me he would rather have a hat. so a hat it shall be. on size 3 needles. it will take forever, i fear.
