green.girl knitting: commentary

04 december 2007 well, fa la la!

no posting, no apologies.

now, we shall talk about the knitting, of which there has been some.

in the never-ending quest to use up yarn, and especially yarn that takes up more than its share of space, i present the fat fall scarf. two skeins of a super-bulky noro for which i have momentarily misplaced the label [update: oimochan multi - color 3, lot a], and a skein of a rough lopi like yarn in brown + size 19 needles + 3 hours watching television = scarf! it is amazing how many things i own that go well with this, so it has already been worn about a billion times. i had just enough of the lopi-esque yarn to make a matching thick ear-warmer/headband. no picture as it seems to be hiding along with the noro label.

the pink fluffy scarf is done! and it is still pink and still very fluffy and still going to make a young, pink-loving girl very happy on christmas morning. it made me happy to finish it as i was getting rather tired of all the stray fluffy bits flying up my nose and down my throat.

but apparently i didn't hate it enough because i am using the leftovers to knit a matching hat. only i am about to set it aside until i can find some less slippery dpns because if one more slips out and i have to rethread the stitches one more bloody time, i am going to kill someone. i like the weight and the points of the knitpicks needles, but dang! so slippery! like the proverbial eel!

this? also using stash, also on the slippery slope needles, so also in the get-better-needles pile. when the better needles get got, it shall continue to become a pair of fingerless mitts out of a cherry tree hill possum blend. mmm, possum. so soft and so very warm. i may have a hard time gifting this set, but she is totally worth it, so i'll have to scrounge and find the other skein of possum i think i have somewhere. unless i gave it to my sister...

and what is this? another scarf? why, yes! yes it is! two skeins of wool in the woods ribbon yarn that have threatened to become a christmas scarf for about five years. well, the threats are over, baby, and the scarf is emerging. garter, garter, garter, on size 11s, i think. a nice mindless television knit that should be done before christmas. if not? it's a jump start on 2008's holiday season! ever the optimist.

sanity check: i will never be able to knit all the presents i want to give this year.

solution? sewing! i am going to whip out some cute tote bags and stuff them full of stuff. candy stuff, soap stuff, stuff stuff. i haven't used the machine in about eight years, but surprisingly, the first bag was not completely terrible.

it even had a lining! and a pocket! and two-tone straps! i am oddly proud of it, even though the seams are somewhat less than straight, to put it politely. i have plans for several more, and a few pillowcases, maybe a placemat or two. good thing, as the fabric stash needs to be used as well; a girl can only have so many storage boxes in her bedroom...
