green.girl knitting: commentary

3 january 2009 supreme

this month was a lot of crazy work before the 12th, a week of celebrating the small child's birthday from the 17th to the 24th and a lot of crazy work after that. but, in that one week in the middle there? in that week we all hopped on a plane and then another plane and then we were in washington dc. i love dc in general but this was extrra special as we were there to witness my brother-in-law argue a case before the supreme court. it was incredibly interesting and much different in a lot of ways from what i was expecting and i wouldn't have missed it for the world. and as a bonus we were out of there before all the obama fooforaw began. the evidence of the event was everywhere -- port-a-potties lined up and down the mall, temp fences cutting off areas, collapsible bleachers, and on every street sign and lamp post a notice declaring a state of emergency. it made me laugh every time i saw a sign.

as i was sitting next to the small child on all the flights, and as she insisted upon being entertained. and as there was little time just sitting around in dc, except while at court and i don't believe they would have looked kindly upon my fiber, there was surprisingly little knitting during the foray. and also little prior to the foray. but afterwards?

afterwards i found some leftover brown wool/silk, and a skein of noro silk garden and a pattern for a fair isle tam and i decided i should conquer the fair isle thing. so i did. what i did not conquer was the appropriate skill involved in matching yarns. it might have helped had i actually looked at the middle of the noro skein to see if there would be something resembling a bit of contrast with the solid brown. the corrugated ribbing is brilliant as is the first inch or two and then we move into an area where the pattern is rather ghost like -- it can be seen if you are looking for it but it is very subtle. finally, thankfully, it breaks out into white blue so the final star is very visible.

i've never been a tam girl, have never really worn a tam but i am surprisingly fond of this one. it is soft and slouchy and it stays on my head like a good tam should. of course, you'll mostly have to take my word for it as this is the only action shot i have at the moment.

so there you have it--first finished object of 2009.
