not only did i have enough yarn for an almost 3" border, i still have yarn left. i'd show you a photo to prove it, but it seems to have gone missing. must query the cat...
it really tuned out quite lovely -- soft, with great drape, and the colors are so rich and vibrant. it is deceptively simple in shape and stitch but all the simples manage to make themselves into an elegant. i pressed sophie into modeling before it was packed into her luggage. the back:
the front, with disgruntled child who would rather be exploring the grandmother's pond and garden than wearing a wool shawl in the early summer evening:
so now i am content to lazily knit on the new blue scarf. it is rather longer than it appears in the picture, i think, but no matter, it will be as long as two skeins of yarn well make it. and no longer. i've memorized the pattern and just need to check at which point within the pattern i need to start each row; hopefully that will be memorized as well in the near future.
the child, looking somewhat mollified, after being allowed to run about a bit. i really do love the drape of the shawl, mayhaps i need to make myself one. and the mama has hinted that if one were to fall about her shoulders, it would not be sent packing.

either i am very, very bad at estimating how far yarn will go, or this yarn is akin to manna from heaven.
i keep knitting and the yarn refuses to end, which is a mighty good thing. i've knit almost the entire suggested 2 1/2 inches of border and i still have enough for a few more rows, a bind off, and maybe a small flower to attach to a stick to make a coordinating shawl pin.
the last bit is totally optional at this point...
04 august 2009 maybe
it is starting to cool down, which is a good and lovely thing. as i tweeted earlier this week, power knitting my way through a wool shawl during the hottest part of the year may not have been my smartest choice. but it will be pretty.
all the while i was knitting and sweating i was also having an internal conversation that went something like this:
"there's no way i'll have enough yarn to even get to the part where the ruffle starts"
"i totally have enough yarn"
"i am so going to run out of yarn"
"looks like there is plenty of yarn"
i had enough to get to the 'bottom' where i have six stitches. i even have enough to knit all the way to the end and back again, i think, maybe even a few rows more! and if i don't have enough of a ruffle, i have some solid khaki that i think would make a nice edging. i'll see where things sit after i do all the m2 and the k1 k2t maneuvers and then will decide about that.
you can't really see how big it is, but you can see how nicely the colors are playing with each other -- very little pooling. it also has wonderful drape. now, if it just softens a bit in the final wash, it will be perfect.
and i won't want to give it away.
