green.girl knitting: commentary

15 november 2009 recycle

i am easily distracted these days.

i was sitting at work, waiting while someone used my computer for something, and i took a long look at the scarf i was wearing. it is about five years old and and should never have been knit in stockinette as it has just grown longer and skinnier with each passing year. it has also matted up a bit, being mohair, or at least partly mohair. so, as i was sitting, i grabbed a pair of scissors, snipped the yarn at the end, and unravelled it. it wasn't easy. but i found that no deterent. and then, i brought it home.

and i started reknitting it, ignoring the christmas bags, ignoring the noro shawl, jumping straight into the mesh stitch that started the obsession.

bloody hard to get a good picture, though. maybe when it is done, we will have a little sun...

10 november 2009 sparkle

i've had this yarn for at least three years. probably longer. i'm not sure they still make aurora, with it's sparkling binder, but i know this color, 4, is discontinued.

in any event, i bought it because i loved it, but i have not been able to find a pattern that worked for both me and the yarn. i tried some entrelac but frogged it. i tried a new mesh stitch. i frogged it.

then i saw a shawl that fullfilled my current fascination with mesh and also had enough plain knitting to really show off the beauty of the yarn. it is lavalette from through the loops. my mother has spent a large portion of her life researching alzheimer's and similar diseases, so that resonated with me as well.

the wonder of noro is you sometimes have no idea what colors are hiding in the middle of the skein. i have a pretty dark living room in the autumn so it wasn't until i took the above picture that i realized there was purple in this colorway. but even in my dimly lit world, the aqua binder sparkles away.

i have four skeins and am just finishing off the second so it will be plenty big. oddly enough, though i put a lot of thought into what to knit with the yarn, i have yet to decide who will get to wear it. me? not me?

5 november 2009 rose

i've started on the market bag for the first of sophie's teachers.

i have yet to decide if the darker dusty rose will be for mrs m or mrs s, but in either event, it is moving along quite nicely. i went with the garter stitch bottom, knit with two strands, to make the base stronger. and i am now zooming around and around in the happy little mesh pattern.

i am fairly close to the length i am shooting for. i just need to decide on handles. i've done one with short crocheted handles, one with a long crocheted strap and for this one, i am thinking about continuing in the mesh. i saw one somewhere that looked like that; must retrace my electronic steps and see if i can find it...

i am all about mesh stitches of late. don't know why, but i might as well indulge it while it lasts. i saw a pattern for a scarf that i quite liked. i have some yarn that has been rather lost in looking for a pattern. maybe mesh will be its destiny.
