green.girl knitting: commentary

10 july 2010 hot

summer has finally arrived. and true to form my whining about the heat shall commence. 25 years in the pnw and i have officially become a heat-wuss.

luckily, i have some smallish things to work on, in lightweight wools, so knitting can continue. the sweater is done save a wash and a block and the proper application of buttons. i don't think i have any suitable so i must make a pilgrimage somewhere to find good ones. i ended up skipping the ruffle on the bottom, mostly because i thought it looked a little fussy and might be a little lumpy om the back of a small wiggly baby; the garter stitch border mimics both the neckline and the break between top and bottom and i am very happy with it.

there was an abundance of yarn left over so i started a bonnet. i have a pattern for a feather and fanned one but think instead i shall monkey with it a little -- adding more stitches to make it bigger and using the heart pattern from the sweater instead of the feather and fan. we'll see if this works. if not, i'll rip it out and start again. just like that.

and just like that i started another shawl, a rather rustic one in some impulse-purchased wool from goodwill; it was three lovely skeins of blackberry-colored canadian wool for four dollars, very hard to resist. and i am using it immediately, not stashing it, so it is almost as if it never happened...

i am so loving the dense garter stitch of it, springy and sproingy and all around happiness-making.

also? my sister is moving back to hawaii. i shall now have to rethink all my knitting plans for her. tragic.
