green.girl knitting: commentary

28 august 2011 outer banks

i've finished the number of repeats as designated in the original pattern.

the yarn and pattern and i have reached a truce of sorts, so work has proceeded uneventfully. but now that i have finished the fifth section, and the ball of yarn i have left seems really big, i have decided to execute a tactical maneuver: i'm going up a needle size. or two.

we'll see if it has the desired effects: use yarn more quickly; make the bottom of the shawl more open and drapey; change the spacing of the gradients.

wow, the pictures of this project are really boring.

20 august 2011 trouble

i am not really feeling the love.

i am not overly fond of the yarn. i am not overly fond of the pattern. on the other hand, i am rather liking the subtle color change as the rows stack up. i'll stick with it because i still think i will like the final product but i am already at the point where i am bargaining with myself to force some progress.

16 august 2011 third camping trip

800 yards of yarn, that's the challenge.

although i wear blue infrequently, it has been bothering me that i don't have a blue based scarf -- one that will go nicely with jeans, or denim in general. so i went looking for a yarn that would be blue and 800 yards and, preferably, something i had yet to use in my knitting life. and i settled on this german zauberball, partly because it was german, partly because i liked the color and mostly because it is fun to say zauberball.

i have to say, i also had a bit of a problem deciding on a pattern. the test swatches i knit in various lace patterns had me screaming with frustration because though it seems as though it wouldn't, this yarn splits like over-processed hair. even with a relatively dull point on the needles. so, the plainer the better, i reasoned, and i decided to go with citron, making it as big as the yarn would allow.

even with that, the M1s are killing me as i try to get the needle through the back of the picked up loop without splitting the thing. maybe i should try again with sharper needles and see if this one particular maneuver is better with them...

13 august 2011 mittens

i has them.

i finished them last weekend but could not find the camera. and now that i've found it i cannot get a well-lit picture. ah, well, such is.

i am inordinately fond of them, putting them on and off several times an evening, even though they are entirely too warm to wear in august. i am also inordinately annoyed that it is august; we haven't had a summer to speak of so why can't it just get a move on and become properly cool so that mittens and shawls and sweaters can once again be worn....
