15 september 2011 catching up
i did end up giving the shawl to my mama. she liked it very much, especially as she is wearing a lot of denims of late, and will get a lot more use out of it than i. that, of course, still leaves me with a blue scarf gap in my life, but i will fill it eventually.
i took a few hours while i was watching sophie swim [last weekend of the year for the pool to be open] and finished up the fetching mitts for myself. while the weather is not properly autumnal, there are hints of it, so i now have the gloves ready and waiting. they are so soft and squishy and i am going to enjoy wearing them very much.
i also decided to try and make good on a foolish promise i made a year ago. a coworker had seen one of those 'miracle scarves' -- the ones that are a tube and can be stretched down to make a scarf, or open to make a cowl/hood. another coworker had given me a big bag of fun fur yarn. the two events collided and i said i would at least try to reproduce. there are a few patterns on the web, but most involve using a knitting loom. i do have one, somewhere, but i am trying it with a size 17 needle.
i have six skeins and this is the result of one. so far so good, except for the little twist near the beginning, leaving a barely perceptible keyhole; it's hard to knit this stuff in the round...
10 september 2011 done and done!
i finished the knitting thursday night. so much fun binding off 732 stitches with a stretchy bind-off!
i hauled out the mattress last night and blocked it. i don't have a good way to block a straight-edged curve, if that makes any sense, so i decided to just pull the top straight, with blocking wires, and let the rest of it hang loosely, after i gave it a good tug in every direction. it sounds a bit strange and unorthodox, but it seems to have done the trick!
this morning i wove in the ends, and photographed it and now i must decide whether it is to stay home with me, or be wrapped up and given to my mother for her birthday. i have to decide now; her birthday was wednesday and i will see her today...
05 september 2011 plus 2
i have finished two additional repeats of the patterns, resulting in about six extra inches in length.
that is a good thing as i am a tall girl. and if i decide to give it to someone shorter then it will be more substantial. i am still torn about the whole keep versus gift thing. i suppose i will have to wear it a bit once it is blocked to see how i feel about it then.
i am going to start the ruffled edging but i may well change it from all stockinette to at least part garter stitch; i am not fond of the way the bottom looks as written. that little curl, it disturbs me...
