26 july 2012 for the gold
just in time for the opening ceremonies, the red, white, and blue shawl is done.
now i will have to find a heavily air-conditioned venue in which to watch the festivities so that the shawl can watch as well. four skeins of cascade 220 makes it a little heavy for 80+ degrees in july, but i am going to love it when the winter olympics roll around in two years. this picture slays me -- rumpled pre-teen supermodel poise...
there were leftovers, but not many; i think i will throw them into the giant bag of small balls of yarn. one day i will knot them all together and then knit a giant crazy tube of knitting history.
and before i forget, my sister finally sent pictures of her shawl. it is happy to be in hawaii, she assures me.
now, i am off to wind the four incredibly soft skeins of wool that are to be camp loopy project 3 into balls. tomorrow is the day!
22 july 2012 on the edge
for no good reason, knitting the blue was incredibly tedious.
but it is all done! and somewhat more narrow than i thought it would be but hey, it is done! which means i am now on skein four, the edging skein. it is a simple pattern and i had it memorized about the third time through, so it is zooming right along.
i am knitting it as written, picking up into the hole on the edge and it looks okay. so round and round i go!
20 july 2012 slightly ahead of the curve
working in a conference room, in a group setting, is incredibly productive most days, but it does cut down on the work knitting. even if it is time for a break, i usually won't pull out the blanket, because the perception is i am slacking off. not to the people in the room with me, they know i've been working, but to those who pass by the fishbowl in which we sit.
however, i can easily weave in an end in a minute or so, which is less than the 8-10 a square takes me. so weaving in has occurred!
hopefully, it means when i am done knitting, i will also almost be done with the ends. that would be quite lovely.
16 july 2012 poor little sick girl
i've been wretchedly ill, so ill i didn't even feel like knitting. horror!
but, after four days lounging on the couch like an understudy for la boheme, i picked up the needles again and both finished the striped section and started the solid blue. now that i am halfway through the blue, i must seriously think about the last skein of white. i started the shawl as a modified truly tasha but i didn't like the way the yo as the first stitch was looking with the stripes; it didn't seem as though it would be sturdy enough to act as an edging anchor. so i changed the edging to be k1, yo, k2tog, yo. there's still a hole at the edge, but you have to go over a stitch to get to it and i don't know how that will look with the edging as defined. mayhaps i need to knit the edging onto a bit of it as a sample, just to see. if i hate it? i am thinking either do the proper edging at the top and maybe an i-cord around the rest. or maybe crochet a line of stars for the top and i-cord the rest. or maybe just go crazy with stars...
looking ahead, camp loopy 2012 project three is to be 500 yards, at least 2 colours, knit in a pattern new to me. so, i've got three colors, 636 yards and no pattern in mind as yet, but i am inclined to go with some sort of garter stitch scarf for the husband. garter stitch has been dominant through the first two projects so why change horses midstream?
the yarn is amazingly soft; it will be difficult to not keep it just to fondle when i need a hug. the fibre company's road to china light -- in hematite, grey pearl, and lapis -- in case you were wondering.
04 july 2012 4th
happy birthday, usa!
i decided fireworks and the backyard barbeque were not enough so i added in a little christmas, gifting shawls to my mother and sister. my sister's sothia turned out big and bright and lovely and i absolutely forgot to take a picture of the finished product. my sister has promised to send one so eventually i may be able to show it. mostly, it looked like all the other sothias in the world, in dark and light green. my sister loves green, and it goes well with her hawaiian wardrobe.
and as my mother was as enchanted with the owls as i was, i made a decision on the spot and handed it over to her. she has an owl pin, with topaz eyes, that will work beautifully with it. i should try and get a picture of that as well, one day when i am over there.
so that just leaves the camp loopy project 2!
i felt very patriotic whilst knitting it at the aforementioned backyard barbeque, and even though it could not be worn for independence day, i will be able to wear it during the olympics, should i need a little wrap. it isn't going as quickly as i would like, but i need to take a deep breath and realize 800 yards is not going to be an overnight knit.
