green.girl knitting: commentary

26 september 2012 lightning speed

i had forgotten how quickly crochet both works up and consumes yarn.

these are both good things. i saw a link to a mobius cowl that was crocheted and thought, that looks easy, i should try it. i've been wanting to get my crochet mojo going again as i have some ideas for blankets i want to try, so i grabbed the rest of the purple leftovers and had at it. ninety minutes later, there was definite progress.

i'll keep at it until either all the yarn is used up, or it is as deep as it can be without being cumbersome. i'm hoping the former; if the latter, i'll just have to find one more little project to finally kill the yarn.

23 september 2012 cooler

it finally feels like fall, which is not surprising as it is the first full day of the season.

i love the leaves turning, the cooler mornings, the smell of smoke every once in a while. and i love that i will soon start wearing more and more knitted items, as will everyone else! i snuck into my mama's wardrobe while she was in paris and snapped a quick pic of the neutral earth cowl. the green is so soft and lovely and even though it might seem more like spring than autumn, somehow it works for the season.

as does the very spring green of the sequined cowl. i can't decide if the pattern is intentionally knit inside out, or if it is actually being knit right side out. both sides are interesting but i think the current inside is a little better, what with the 'arches' of the slipped stitches. if i were better able to knit while lying flat on my back with my foot elevated [cellulitis, the less said the better] i would have been done with this by now. as it is, it might be one of the projects i take to dallas in 10 days.

the size 9 needles i ordered to knit the small child's cat cardigan came in the mail this week, so there's that to get a start on as well.

7 september 2012 the mama

the neutral earth cowl is all done and blocked and gifted to my mama on her actual birthday!

sadly, i completely forgot about taking a picture. hopefully one day soon i will remember and will snap a photo when i am over there.

4 september 2012 cowls

it would appear that september will be the month of cowls.

firstly, i finished the purple cowl of leftovers. and there are still leftovers. so i need to decide how best to use them up. maybe some matching mitts. maybe a hat. maybe another cowl, because we are all over cowls this month! or maybe i just throw the leftovers in the corner where they can sit quietly until inspiration hits.

secondly, the small child brought me a skein of yarn when she returned from her canadian vacation. not being endowed with a wealth of patience, she wanted me to use it right this very minute. so we looked for a pattern, via ravelry, and found one that was written for the yarn and we agreed it would be the perfect choice. so, here's to the sequin lace cowl! i'm aiming for one repeat a night but there's no real rush here at the moment.

thirdly, there is a rush for this one. the mama has a birthday on the 7th and i could not find an appropriate gift. so i decided she can always use new woolen things! i had seen a stitch pattern on a shirt in the latest knitters that was intriguing, and i had unearthed two skeins of wool in tan and pale green that were looking sad and lonely, so i decided to make an infinity scarf/cowl thing. scarves have a tendency to slip off her so this seemed to be a good idea. and if she is really cold, she can double or triple it around the head and or neck.

it is easy and the needles are large, 10 1/2, so i think i can whip it out in a few days. i will see her on friday and with a little luck i can hand it over.
