30 january 2013 once again, with feeling!
i finished the round of edging.
and then promptly decided i needed to do a second round. just having the one didn't look quite right; it was a little light and didn't anchor the flowers as well as i would have liked. i asked the mama, and she agreed, so more hooking in the future. another round of crochet and then i'll decide if that is enough or if more is required. maybe a final round of single crochet? right now i am figuring out increases and decreases that will allow the edging to lie flat. i think this is the winner.
so, this once portable project is no longer portable. and that means new project! i've had these four skeins of bulky-ish yarn for years and years. and while i still love them, i no longer feel the need to just have them to look at. i've started three different scarves/shawls and have yet to find something that makes my heart sing.
i have no idea where this incarnation is heading, but so far i am not annoyed with it, so i'll let it run a little ways and see where we end up.
13 january 2013 hills and valleys
up and down and up and down, round and round.
i'm watching football and crocheting edges and it is going rather swimmingly.
the top and bottom edges are peaks and valleys, and the side edges are half-hexagonals, with ditches instead of valleys and mesas instead of peaks.
it is all very geographical.
11 january 2013 the edge
today was part one of the great reveal.
last night i sewed the last pieces together and today i took the blanket to my mother's and let her have a look at it. i had almost convinced myself she would hate it, it was too chaotic, too many colors, wouldn't work in her house, blah blah blah paranoid blah.
she loved it. and it looks good in more than one room of her house. and it is just the right size to cover her from toes to chest while sitting in a chair or the couch. excellent!
the reason she got the preview was a decision needed to be made on the edging. yes or no? if yes, single, half double, or double crochet? luckily i had the extra two-piece to use as a sample, so a more educated choice could be made.
we're going with double crochet. and dad remained oblivious the whole visit so it will be a surprise to him when the final version is delivered.
09 january 2013 1160
i calculated there are a total of 1160 edges to sew.
but since there are two edges involved in each seam, that's really only 580 seams to sew, right? seems so much more reasonable. [not]. strangely enough, sewing seems to be worse for my hands than crocheting. or knitting for that matter. they are both numb and on fire, which is irritating. maybe it is worse because the weather has been cold and rainy, but i am still going to blame the sewing.
i have 5 full flowers and 5 partials still to attach. stitch by stitch, stitch by stitch...
06 january 2013 two more
i needed a break from the sewing.
so i found the leftover half skein and quickly knit up the two hexes i need to make sure no two of the same color abut.
luckily it was close enough to the original crocheting that i still had the pattern memorized, so less than an hour later -- done!
02 january 2013 stitch by stitch
i find it pleasantly soothing to sew all the flowers together.
for the most part, they line up well, gauge seems to have been fairly consistent, and so it is very rote -- in and out and in and out and in and out, stopping only to turn to get a better angle or to add a new motif or just to check if all is well. and all is well. i think with a good soak and block, any bumpy bits will smooth right out.
and while it goes fairly quickly when i do it, i need to find more minutes in the evening in which to do it. i really want it done by sunday, but am not very confident about that happening. i do have two nights and two weekend days. but weekend days have a habit of disappearing in a sea of errands. and weekend nights seem to be rather occupied with homework assistance of late.
ah well, it will be appreciated whenever it is received. and is appreciated now by a husband who thinks he might need another blanket, a colorful one. i will finish his one day, the modular one in blues and greens and greys, i will.
