green.girl knitting: commentary

29 june 2014 tess

and boom! there it is.

so easy and yet so lovely, i can see this will get a lot of wear in the cooler months. it is not quite long enough for me to tie it in the back, though, so i might find another skein of yarn and add on, or i had a thought about sewing ribbons to the ends. or maybe button-on ribbons, so they could be optional. or maybe nothing, just live with it and curse, ever so slightly, the genetics that made me so tall and broad.

thanks to my darling daughter, roped in for the photoshoot, you can see it hangs very nicely and will keep my shoulders warm. and i really do love the depth of the browns.

and it is pretty heavy -- not a flimsy lightweight shawl at all, but a good, sturdy, working shawl.

28 june 2014 almost

i'm at that point when i have to start thinking baout how many rows i can squeak out of the yarn without running short on the bind-off.

i'm thinking at least one more 4 row repeat, but i might be fooling myself. maybe just 1/2 a repeat and then the loose bind-off.

either way, it will be done before the end of the month! goal achieved!

20 june 2014 camping

first, no reveal on the shawl. i was terribly ill the week before it was due but still managed to get it done to the point of cast-off. then monday afternoon, sophia informed me the choir director had been called away to hawaii to deal with an ailing parent and wouldn't be back for the end of year. so, i set it aside. i will bind off and block later this summer and then we'll make a trip back to middle school to gift it.

and that means, new project!

once again i am participating the Loopy Ewe summer camping challenge. from their site: "The Challenge for Project One - Find a project that reminds you of one of your favorite books, TV Shows, or movies. It can be based on a character, or a scene, or colors, or names, or however you'd like to interpret your love of that book/show/movie. This first project must have a minimum of 400 yards, used in one project."

my inspiration was hardy's tess of the d'urbervilles -- that is the name of the pattern, and the color reminds me of nastassja kinski's hair and eyes, in the movie adaptation. i am so loving the way the turquoise needles look with the brown yarn. simple pattern and so stress free!

11 june 2014 split

this yarn will not be purchased again.

it is a lovely color with just a bit of a halo, at at good price, but the constant struggle with it splitting is going to make me throw something.

i've tried three different types of needle -- no matter how sharp or how blunt, the yarn is just prone to splitting. i don't think i've actually lost a ply during a stitch, but i've come close entirely too many times. only 4,608 stitches to go , may none of them split...

05 june 2014 true colors

this is probably the closest i've gotten to capturing the true color of this yarn.

i've hit my groove now and it is really coming along. stitches just flying off the needle.

i have a sreadsheet, showing how many stitches are left and how many to go, but i try not to think about it too much; too many stitches -- the thought alone sometimes paralyzes me.
