31 july 2014 ta-da!
and now it is really, truly finished.
while on a mother-daughter outing that involved a lot of waiting around, i kept knitting, figuring i would bind-off when i either ran out of yarn, or the movie was about to start. it ended up being the latter, and the final stitches were made during the previews in front of guardians of the galaxy. highly recommended viewing, btw. also recommended are the tempura brussels sprouts at jinya; so incredibly tasty. most recommended, mother-daughter outings; i love my kid so much and really enjoy just hanging out with her, talking, eating, watching, confiding. i have a very happy little family, and i am grateful for it every day.
oh yes, this is about knitting: scarf done!
it was immediately claimed, and if it weren't so hot, my beautiful girl might have worn it right then and there, even without the ends woven in.
as it was, i had her model it quickly once we got home, so i could upload the proof of having finished under the deadline. she definitely wants it left as a scarf, but i might try to convince her that as a shawl she could still wear it as a scarf. then i could borrow it when i needed a shawl. never thought i'd even think about sharing clothing items with my daughter.
now to decide how best to use the yarn - green shades of cascade 220 -- and the ideas -- crochet granny square -- to accomplish the third project.
27 july 2014 technically...
i have finished the challenge.
this is 600+ yards of scarf/shawl.
but...
i have yarn left, and i have a company meeting on wednesday that begs for knitting. i think this will be a little longer when all is said and knit.
15 july 2014 halfway
tody is the halfway mark of the month and fittingly, i am just about halfway through the yarn.
sorry the picture is so bright and glary, but this is exactly how it looked in my office this morning -- that summer sun really brightens up the world for a few hours.
i took the opportunity of a break to go ahead and join the two skeins. i am using the sailor's knot maneuver that i used when making my mother's hexagonal afghan's edging. i can't see this getting so much wear and tear that the unravellng of said knot would become an issue and i love the idea of not weaving in ends on a semi-lacy project.
still haven't decided if it is a shawl or a scarf.
11 july 2014 a good start
i wanted a tropical themed pattern for the yarn, and i wanted a rectangular shawl.
so i settled on the palm fronds shawl. it's really nothing more than feather and fan, but i think it will look lovely when i block it out.
also looks lovely just as a scarf. might have to dwell on its final state -- stretched or not.
the four row pattern repeat requires little thinking and i can bust out those four rows in 15 minutes, even with distractions. hopefully, all those four row additions will add up to a finished project by the end of the month.
01 july 2014 glass breakwater
and now, project 2 for camp loopy: "The Challenge for Project Two - Find a project that reminds you of one of your favorite places to vacation or relax. It can be based on colors, regions, names, or however you'd like to interpret your love for that favorite place. This second project must have a minimum of 600 yards, used in one project."
this is a google maps view of a tiny little beach just north of the glass breakwater on guam. it is one of my favorite places, and i spent many an afternoon there, alone or with just one friend. it was so quiet and absolutely perfect when a little solitude was required.
and this is a quilt block made with scraps, the turquoise pieces, of my favorite sarong from that era. i wore it until it started falling apart, and then wore it a little longer.
so you can hopefully see how i saw this yarn, and knew right away it was the one. hedgehog fibres sock yarn in the color sea glass -- looks like my sarong, shares a name with my secret beach.
